"l'âme soeur (Soul Mate) 3D" Short film exploration

description

On August 17-18th, staff from the S3D Centre directed the first variable rate HFR shoot of its kind with talented independent crew and cast members in Vancouver BC. "L'âme Soeur (Soul Mate) 3D" is a dual short film / applied research project that takes full advantage of HFR technology. Shot on the RED Epics on a motorized Kernercam stereoscopic 3D rig in both standard and high frames rates, we used the most recent advances in technology to investigate a question we have been studying for the past year: If technology were capable of capturing and displaying a complete narrative that incorporates variable standard and high frame rates, what are the creative benefits/drawbacks of doing so?

Tuan-Yuan (團圓): A Candy / Riceball Tray

description

Dongzhi Festival, or Chinese Winter Stolstice Festival, is celebrated around December 22nd, the first day of Dongzhi solar term.

In Chinese culture, Dongzhi festival is a time for family and friends to get together. One of the most significant activities is the making and eating of Tangyuan (glutinuous riceball), which symbolize reunion.

Tuan-Yuan is a candy and riceball tray that symbolically represents reunion. “Yuan” in Chinese means sphere, circle, or ring; it also connotes being together. Tuan-Yuan is made of 8 wood circles weaving with each other, meaning big reunion. The five pedals on the top resembles to the flower of plum, the national flower of Taiwan.

Tuan-Yuan was featured in Wood Co-op’s 2008 winter holliday collection.

Jio-Hu (酒狐): A Sake Bottle

images

description

The shape of this sake bottle is inspired by an old Chinese folktale (ghost story) that my grandma used to tell me when I was little: In the ancient time, when it was very late at night, intoxicated man often got possessed by fox spirit who disguised herself as a beautiful woman with a wide-brimmed rain hat. The drunken man would take her home, and in the end, he would be eaten by the fox spirit.

The requirement of this project was to model the object on Rhinoceros 4.0 and afterward, oursource/ 3d print, and assemble the components together.

PECK: Interactive Birdhouse

images

description

PECK was a group project developed with the children of Emily Carr Elementary through a series of workshops and codesign sessions. Through these sessions, we learned that the kids’ favourite creative activities almost always involved building things and animals. We also wanted our object to let them interact with nature and be outdoors.

The project parameters called for us making an interactive object using primarily plywood and repeating shapes.

With the obsessive-compulsive stacking and little nervous twitches, I suppose you could say this robotic arm is on crack-ers... sorry. XP

Practicing was done, mistakes were made, knowledge was acquired... what can I say? It was my first attempt at doing anything more significant than model a chess piece!

Whatever you do, ignore the floating tree... I SAID IGNORE IT!!!!

Dark and gloomy was my intent, though I suppose I overdid it just a little. Like I said, this was an excellent experiment and practice exercise, and I am now ever so slightly the wiser for it. Any constructive comment, tips, wisdom, advise, etc. are appreciated, feel free.

Dodging Fences - Flythrough near Granville and Robson.

description

Final project for XSI Essentials with Thomas Groppi.

Based on a location at the corner of Robson and Granville, this flythrough demonstrates what happens when someone who loves building maquettes decides to see how many polys XSI can crunch and still run smoothly.

The end result is a fully modeled chain-link fence topped with a double helix of barbed wire that weighs in at 656k triangles.
