The Pale Blue Dot

description

A large-scale poster (17" x 50") partially inspired by vintage woodcut posters. The poster contains an eclectic mix of typefaces, spelling out a famous excerpt from Cosmos by Carl Sagan, an astromoner and writer, and a personal hero of mine. The poster itself is dark blue, like the night sky, and the text is coloured in a gradient that goes from grey to blue to orange, like a sunset. The infamous "pale blue dot" is at the top of the poster, providing an early context for the viewer before they understand that the dot represents Earth.

Alcuin Awards

description

Poster design for the Alcuin Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. All typography on the poster was hand-drawn and digitally rendered by me for this project, and became a real test to my own skills as a letterer to learn where my strengths and weaknesses were.

Access 2011 conference

description

Access is a prominent Canadian librarian conference. It is where librarians converge to talk about sharing information and data to the general public. Access 2011 was hosted in Vancouver. This project was a collaboration between Sarah Kozlowski and myself.

Our concept for the identity looks to older traditions and how they have been updated with a contemporary twist, to compliment a similar trend currently occuring in libraries. Our main inspiration was the crafting movement, specifically cross stitching. These librarians are taking information from our past and making it contemporary, much like artisans.

Not entirely happy with my font choice, but that's okay and could be fixed.

It's based on the All Your Base Internet meme:

Included in each poster is the designers name, a short blurb about the font, each letter of the alphabet allong with some punctuation and is created in the original style and use (of the font) from its era of creation.
