Swan Lake Booklet

description

This project was made as an exploration of expressive typography in the storytelling of a traditional folktale. Choosing Anthea Bell’s narrative of the clasical ballet play Swan Lake, I designed the pages of this booklet to echo the tone of the story in notes of romanticism, the delicate voices of the swans and the poetic nature of the play. The typefaces used for these expressions were Adobe Caslon, Scala Sans and Electra. Working within limitations such as no use of imagery/illustrations, the project represents a challenge to rely on typographic expression alone to convey action and emotion.

Roma/Internet Map Book

description

The setup for this project was to interpret two historical events, a global and a personal one. The re-imagination of a teenager's blurred memory of Rome and the advent of the Internet and its digital era resulted in a double-sided map reproduction of a traditional map of Rome, contrasted against a digital version on the other side. A clash between the traditional and the digital, this project speaks about fragmentation between the reality of our experiences and the virtual reality that we live by in today's era. Typographical experimentation and medium interplay were used to enhance the double-map's philosophy.

Alcuin Awards Poster

description

This poster was created for the 29th annual Alcuin Awards, a program that recognizes excellence in Canadian book design. Created in my Advanced Typography course, it was my intention to reflect a more traditional side of book design. The poster was inspired by bookplates, which are also known by their Latin name ex libris, translating to "from the books." As an extra challenge, although the piece was welcome to have subtle image elements, it was required to focus primarily on the use of typography.

Mozilla Foundation – Learning, Freedom and the Web

description

I was one of a team of Emily Carr faculty and students who rose to the challenge, investigating different technology options for creating an ebook that would reflect Mozilla's core principles. That meant building an ebook that could work on iPads and Android tablets, desktop computers and smartphones, and that could be distributed for free. A simple PDF was one option, but it didn't take advantage of the navigation and multimedia opportunities a tablet could provide.

BRAVADO Magazine — High gloss pixels

description

In the Fall Semester of 2011, I redesigned the website for BRAVADO Magazine and performed a full Wordpress implementation for Evan Goodfellow and his staff. The design of the website involved concept development, paper-prototyping, development of HTML, CSS, jQuery, and PHP for Wordpress implementation. The theme BRAVADO now runs on is custom to suit their content. Much thanks to Evan and the crew at BRAVADO.
