Green Walls Favela Art- Museo de Favela, Rio de Janeiro, August/2014

description

The Green Walls Favela Art project commemorates the visit of members of ICOM (International Council of Museums) to Museo de Favela--AUGUST, 2013.

During the month of April 2014, five artists living in the favela Contagalo, created this unique outdoor gallery.  Professor Emeritus, Emily Carr University of Art and Design—Vancouver, Britrish Columbia, Canada curated the project-installation. The "team" visited Rio Botanical Gardens and learned about growing plants in repurposed plastic containers and disgarded coconuts from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro.  Artists created large format paintings that included spaces to contain plants. Hence, "Green Walls Favela Art" installations.

In Designing for Democracy, as a class we worked on creating an elections campaign for Elections BC.  This particular work was looking at the possibility of interactive pop out coaster with the fictional character of 'sasquatch' that one could pop out and put in their pocket and find at a later date and then remember the [environmental] context that sasquatch came from.

Project Tunnel Vision - Systems Design

description

Project Tunnel Vision is an investigation into the contemporary playground environment. Upon exploring various problems with modern playgrounds it was learnt that children are not included in the design process, and when they were it was generally a token gesture. The purpose of this systems design is to put children at the front lines of the design process. By consulting children with a number of constructive activities, a context-specific design is created via community engagement. Once a playground has been designed by both the children and the design team, it is shown to the client and goes through several revisions by the client and children co-creation team.

Academy of BC Children's Hospital (A.B.C.H.)

description

The Academy of B.C. Children's Hospital (ABCH) is a group project in collaboration with B.C. Children's Hospital that involves building a new framework for their existing website.

The design problem is that there is a massive amount of information presented in a rather dry and static way, and we do acknowledge that a hospital website needs to be highly informative. How could we present this material in a manner that encourages the interaction of exchanging and receiving this health knowledge within and outside the website? During the process, we came up with the idea that people learn the most through teaching, when they're reiterating their knowledge to other people. The final outcome revolves around the idea of sharing.

We Are Adoption

description

As my thesis for my first semester Grad Project, I wanted to look at the adoption community and see if there were ways through design, improvements could be made.

With and original focus on alleviating anxieties in prospective adoptive parents, I came to the conclusion that the community construct needed to be re-thought, and approached with new eyes.

PublicWorks: A Designer's Union.

files

description

While the city regularly assesses the demand for public amenities within municipal jurisdiction and monitors the success of new amenities, or ones that have become “problem amenities” (misused), rarely is a thorough review completed from a designer’s perspective.  The complexities behind the process, beginning with public demand and communication to the municipality and ending with the proposed design fully integrated within a community, requires an independent third party who can bridge both interests.

The idea? PublicWorks: A Designer's Union.
